Schongauer, Martin
(1445/50, Colmar, Alsacia–2 feb. 1491, Breisach, Baden).

Pintor y grabador alemán. Aunque fue un pintor prolífico, cuyos paneles eran requeridos en muchos países, su trabajo como grabador logró un reconocimiento incomparable en el norte de Europa. Sus grabados, compuestos por alrededor de 115 planchas, representan una manifestación altamente refinada del espíritu del arte gótico tardío. Perfeccionó el grabado al ampliar su rango de contrastes y texturas, aportando su sensibilidad artística a un arte que, hasta entonces, había sido dominio de los orfebres. La gracia de su obra se hizo proverbial durante su vida, dando origen a sobrenombres como Hübsch ("encantador) Martin y Schön ("bello) Martin.
